Since I was young, I’ve always enjoyed reading comic books. My love for comics has continued into adulthood, especially during the COVID era when most of us found ourselves working from home. Webtoons had an irresistible charm, as they could be enjoyed anytime, anywhere with just a smartphone. Unlike traditional comics printed on paper, which required a visit to comic book stores or libraries, webtoons were accessible online. What’s more, webtoons were serialized weekly, with each episode being short enough not to demand too much of your time. In less than five minutes per episode, you could step into another world created by your favorite authors, with engaging stories and characters.
Webtoons, often called “snack culture,” allow you to savor content in bite-sized portions. Yet, unlike traditional comics, webtoons cater to your tastes and interests, offering a wide array of genres from comedy and romance to mystery, historical dramas, and fantasy. As you follow the storylines and direction of webtoons, you might even discover a newfound appreciation for genres you never thought you’d enjoy.
One of the reasons I adore webtoons is the high-quality cultural content available for free. While some services may require payment, the majority of webtoons can be enjoyed at no cost. As you read webtoons, you’ll often find yourself not only engrossed in the story but also amazed by the stunning artwork and skillful execution. Nowadays, webtoons incorporate various techniques such as music, sound effects, and 3D graphics to enhance the immersion, all of which you can enjoy without paying a dime. It’s truly a blessing.
Moreover, webtoons are experiencing a transmedia phenomenon. They serve as a starting point for adaptations into movies, dramas, games, and various other platforms. You can even find webtoon-based TV shows on Netflix, such as “Mask Girl,” “Hellbound,” and “Sweet Home.”
As webtoons continue to gain popularity in Korea, they are expanding overseas, reaching Asia, Europe, and the United States. The ability to share my favorite cultural content with people worldwide is incredibly exciting. From a localization perspective, webtoons offer immense opportunities. Imagining introducing beloved webtoons to various parts of the world through localization is an extraordinary prospect.
