My Path to Localization and Cross-Cultural Connections
Hello there! I am Eunice, and I’m excited to share my journey with you.
Nine years ago, I first learned about the Translation and Localization Management program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and ever since, I’ve been dreaming of becoming a localization specialist. I’m deeply passionate about the fascinating world of localization and its profound impact on connecting diverse cultures globally.
My journey into the field of localization began with a deep appreciation for languages. With over a decade of experience as a Korean interpreter and translator, I’ve had the privilege of working in diverse environments in both Korea and the U.S. In Korea, I held various roles within the automotive industry, as a secretary to a CEO, an overseas purchasing manager, and an English teacher. Despite the diversity of these roles, they all shared a common thread – they involved the use of English. After some soul-searching, I realized my true passion lay in languages, leading me to embark on a career as a freelance interpreter and translator.
In 2015, I relocated to Los Angeles, California. Soon after, I continued my career in the fields of medicine, law, and education, now in the U.S. In 2019, I had a chance to work for a software company called ALELO as a Korean language specialist. ALELO has a license with the US military to provide a language training software for service men and women who are or will be dispatched outside the country. That wasn’t just simple translation. This language training required deep cultural insight and knowledge. For example, I had meetings with the project manager and the product team to give them advice about how subordinates interact with superiors, how they use honorifics, and the degree of formality based on the settings. I worked closely with localization managers to give translation services and feedback for cultural instructions. This experience rekindled my passion for localization and ultimately led me to the Middlebury Institute.
Now, I’m thrilled to continue my journey of cultural connection and communication in the world of localization. My ePortfolio details my experiences as a localization specialist. I’m eager to connect with fellow localizers, collaborators, and anyone interested in the power of localization to bridge cultures.
